The natural range of the species is reported to be Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia and parts of eastern Australia. It has also been widely cultivated in warm climates around the world and is considered as a naturalized species in southern California and Florida. The tree is reported to thrive on wet, swampy soils, and is usually found in dense, pure stands where such conditions prevail
